Surface Vessels

    Surface vessels have a range of needs for accelerometers and gyros. The vessel itself forms the base platform to stabilise (e.g. luxury yachts and naval vessels) and then many sub systems such as antennas, radar, and survey equipment, also need individual stabilization systems. Additionally navigation and guidance systems as well as precision docking systems require highly accurate sensor information. For example, the ability to navigate the most accurate course can save large quantities of fuel and thus reduce operator costs.

    Structural health monitoring of large vessels is a another area where accelerometers and gyros can play a key role. Understanding the stresses on a vessel can improve loading patterns leading to more efficient cargo loading as well as forming a vital part of preventative maintenance programmes. Damage and fatigue can also be monitored and overall performance can be assessed to help improve future vessel design.
