Static buoys are deployed for a range of activities including environmental monitoring, sea state monitoring, tidal monitoring, underwater/above water communications bridges, and underwater monitoring/security. Many of these buoys measure the sea state conditions, drift, tidal pull, or need to have some stabilization to keep measurement and communications equipment aligned. Harsh deployment conditions require very rugged components with very long mean time between failure rates (MTBF).
