The ability to find and hold true north can be required in a range of environments. Any event that causes a localized electromagnetic effect such as the operation of certain types of industrial machinery including mining equipment or boring equipment for construction of transportation tunnels may cause traditional magnetic compasses to temporarily lose accuracy.
Accelerometers and gyroscopes can be used as part of a system to determine true north and avoid issues such as misalignment or temporary loss of direction. They can also be used as aids to other navigation sources or form part of larger navigation system.
- Low Noise is critical for rapid acquisition of north
- Bias stability is important
- For portable applications – good vibration sensitivity
- Low measurement range (200°/s max)
- Quick start-up time: <1s
- Quick result
