Drilling

Drilling for oil and gas needs precise alignment of the drill head and this can be achieved with 'on-head' north finding sensors. Additionally, mapping out old and existing well shafts with robots and sensors requires precise knowledge of the orientation of the sensors as they travel down the shafts. Any sensors used in these kind of harsh environments need to be ultra rugged, reliable and able to withstand large temperature variations.

Utilising very rugged, reliable accelerometers and gyros can significantly increase the accuracy of the data and efficiency of the systems. MEMS technology have performance limits with the temperature ranges encountered in this application and as a consequence more accurate sensors are required.
